Review
This little book is really a
gem!
In his book "Writing
for Fun and Money - How To Make Money Writing & Selling
Information", Joe
Barnes says this about Bates' and Michael's book:
"Several have been written
on the subject. But one stands head and shoulders above the
rest. So if you are going to sell your books by mail, I
suggest that you fortify yourself with a background of
information from the book entitled, "HOW TO MAKE YOUR
FORTUNE WITH BOOKS" by Owen Bates, and Neal
Michaels." (p. 177).
And even though there has been
many other good books written on self-publishing since the
quotation above was written, I still think this book is really
helpful.
Very helpful though somewhat
dated
As is the case with the book by
Joe Barnes, some parts of this book is somewhat dated. But
what does that matter, if you can find only a few pearls here
and there? And I certainly think that you can find many perls
in this book!
A helpful quotation
I remember reading the authors
wise word about not quitting too soon in the information
business:
"Occasionally we hear from
beginning mail order operators who ran a few classfied ads
and turend only a very small profit. They're discouraged and
want to know what they have done wrong, and what they can do
to improve profits.
Many of these people have a
winner and don't even know it! They just don't understand
the nature of classified advertising. In classifieds, you
must pyramid your profits. Not in the multi-level sense, but
by taking the profits earned and plowing them back into
additional ads. If one classified ad from one insertion
earned a $10 profit for you, what would it do for you in ten
publications? In 100 publications? Actually, most mail order
beginners earn more than $10 from their first classified ad
- but for the effort expended and the high hopes they had,
the profit seems insignificant.
Be careful! Don't throw a
winner away simply because it doesn't pay big dividends per
ad. Classifieds simply won't do that for you in the first
place. When you see that you have a potential winner, place
additional ads. go slowly at first, to be sure, and don't
over react by throwing caution to the winds just because you
did well on your first ad, and add a little more from
reserve if you really believe you have winner. Eventually,
with a winning item you will find the top ten or twenty
publications for it and continue your classified ads in
those, simultaneously graduating to some display
advertising. And befor elong, you'll be gratified to see a
viable, profitable mail order business building from that
small classified beginning."
(Owen Bates and Neal Michaels:
"How To Make Your Fortune With Books", p. 29).
And these words did really help me at that time.
Due to the age of this book,
you ought to combine it with some of the other books on
self-publishing. But don't miss it out if you want to get some
real helpful advices and tips!
