Review

I had seen Don Lapre's course several years ago. I decided to purchase it and see what he had to offer. I had no background in selling or advertising products.

From that beginner's perspective, this is what I think of the course:

"Small Ads, Big Profits" is by far the best manual in this package. It goes through the process of advertising with small classified newspaper ads, setting up your voice mail box, plus a sample ad campaign that Don Lapre ran and was successful. He also covers up-selling and tracking your ads. Overall, I found this manual useful. What stopped me was that I didn't have a product to sell.

"Minimize Your Risks, Maximize Your Profits" deals with other methods of advertising, such as co-ops, placemats and menus, calendars, newsletters, etc. Interesting information, but you'll have to get others to agree to use your methods of advertising at their place of business.

"How to Diversify for Success" gives you some tips on buying used stuff and selling it for a profit. Good information, but I wonder how many people would stop doing the job they are doing to get other people's used items to sell them.

"The 1-900 Business" like the name says, is a description of the 1-900 business. This is just an advertisement of Don Lapre's own 1-900 lines for you to rent them.

"Making Money on the Internet" is an introduction to the internet for someone who's never logged on. The information on advertising on the internet is very general.

"What and Where to Sell on the Internet" suggests that you spam people, but using an apology at the beginning of the email. He calls that proper netiquette. I disagree with that assessment. The rest of the manual shows that the author is not very familiar with internet marketing.

"Secrets to a Profitable Business on the Internet" is very generic. It has a lot of advertising from New Strategies (Don Lapre's company) on how to set up and advertise your business online.

"Newspaper Directory" has over 7,000 newspapers listed.

"Over 1,000 Incredible Products" is a directory of products with a description of what the wholesalers offer plus contact information. I sent letters to over 30 wholesalers listed and about half of them responded. Some of them asked for a small fee for a catalog.

"11 Secrets to Success" video gives you some motivational ideas from Don Lapre, and finishes with an ad.

"Quick Start CD" is also an ad. The Internet Website set up guide has some forms for you to fill out and send to New Strategies. About a week after you send the forms, someone calls you trying to sell you internet advertising for about $800. The website is "free", though. You can pay $2 a month for unlimited changes to the website. I find this method of setting up a website extremely slow and cumbersome.

Overall assessment

Although the information provided in the manuals is worth the $40 for those who are new to selling, there are other factors that must be considered: Don Lapre doesn't make money by selling you this package. He does this to sell you other products and services that are more expensive.

For example, both the video and the CD that are included in this package lead you to the 1-900 lines. I received so many calls from Don Lapre's office that I couldn't answer my phone any more. I allowed the answering machine to get all the messages before I answered the phone.

Eventually, I told them not to call me any more.

Go to the Better Business Bureau website and look up "New Strategies" before you decide to purchase products from this company. Buying information: http://www.donlapre.com/
